BNR Partners with Her Campus for a Women’s History Month Movie Screening

In honor of Women’s History Month, Brave New Radio and Her Campus gathered at the Cheng Library Auditorium for a viewing of the 2016 film, Hidden Figures. Members of Brave New Radio gathered on March 2nd with members of Her Campus, William Paterson’s chapter of the #1 online magazine for college women. Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer star in the popular film, Hidden Figures, following the true stories of some of the first African-American women working for NASA. Katherine Johnson, played by Taraji P. Henson, was a mathematician whose orbital calculations were crucial to the success of the first American space flights. Octavia Spencer portrays Dorothy Vaughan, a computer programmer and mathematician who eventually became the very first African-American woman supervisor of NASA. Mary Jackson, portrayed by the popular singer and actress Janelle Monae, was an aeronautical engineer and mathematician in the 1950s. These women were crucial members of NASA and the struggles they faced as women of color in the industry during a time of racism and segregation were important parts of their journey. Women’s History Month is an annual declared celebration in the month of March which highlights the contributions of women and events in history and society. The women portrayed inHidden Figures are just a few important historical women to celebrate this month and every month.
