What Do You Mean: Becca Hannah
Over the weekend I was able to cover the Made in America Festival in Philadelphia. Throughout the two days I interviewed artists to discuss their music and inspirations as well as how they enjoyed performing. This edition of the artist linkup was with Becca Hannah
Becca as a 24-year old from Boston was one of the less experienced acts on the MIA lineup this year.
“It was the biggest performance I’ve done, I have never done a festival like this. It was a huge moment for me.” she remarked when discussing her performance.
Becca is able to combine genres of R&B and Jazz which creates a sound similar to the likes of Amy Winehouse. Much of Becca's lyrics consist of discussing relatable concepts and motifs that expose parts of the human experience that may not be discussed very much. Emotions such as love, pain , and selfishness are prevalent in Becca’s music.
What Do You Mean
Yung Wolf
“In the song “Me and I” you say “Tonight I’m feeling selfish, don't care what they say to hell with it.” what was the message you were trying to get across here””
Becca Hannah
“In the pandemic when everyone was inside, certain people would judge you for going out. However I wanted to socialize with people and go to a bar and dance. It was an unleashing of screw it let me just go for it”
Yung Wolf
“It makes sense, while you’re young have fun”
““This line is from potluck “better when I’m going my way better when I’m doing my thing””
Becca Hannah
“This song was about it being okay to do things for me. Like spending alone time, or not making plans with someone, or not answering that text right away. It could even mean hanging out with other people if that's what you want to do. Overall it is about being intentional about what's best for you.”
Becca’s ability to simplify these ideas into her music is truly astonishing. She continued by saying “We’re all constantly evolving”and that is what she is doing as well. With lots of unreleased music the next few months looks promising for Becca Hannah.
