What Do You Mean: Kenny Mason
Over the weekend I was able to cover the Made in America Festival in Philadelphia. Throughout the two days I interviewed artists to discuss their music and inspirations as well as how they enjoyed performing. This edition of the artist linkup was with Kenny Mason.
The Atlanta native rocked the Freedom stage having people engaged throughout the whole performance. Much of that is due to the sound and energetic flow the “Angelic Hoodrat” is able to possess. However his lyrics are also nothing to laugh about and much have a deeper meaning.
I was able to pick his brain regarding the writing process for a few of his songs during the interview.
What Do You Mean
Yung Wolf
“In the song Halloween you say “made a way to ball on my own why would I fetch.” What was your thought process for that line?””
Kenny Mason
“Why would I do what someone tells me to do when I got this far on my own.”
Yung Wolf
“I completely agree, What about in Get an Idea where you say “If I bite my tongue anymore then I’ll bleed out my lips.””
Kenny Mason
If I hold in my thoughts , if I hold in how I feel then it will start to cause me pain and damage me.So it -(Get an Idea) is a euphemism for that.
Yung Wolf
“Sounds great, this last line made me laugh because of how real it is “Don’t watch me watch your ho” from the song “Dip””
Kenny Mason
“That line is pretty self explanatory my boy… keep your eyes on the prize.”
And that appears to be exactly what Kenny is doing as his response to my final question was fairly on the nose as to what he has up next.
When asked “If your life was a movie what would the title be?” he responded “PUP” which is the title of his ep which came out last month.
All in all Kenny is an amazing artist and performer and I anticipate great things for him in the future.
