Brave New Radio Weighs In on Drake’s New Album

On June 16, 2022, Drake surprised the world with his seventh-studio album titled Honestly, Nevermind. The Toronto artist gave us some hot singles from his 2021 album Certified Lover Boy including “Champagne Poetry”, “Knife Talk” and more. However with this new album, fans are noticing a different vibe compared to Drake’s past releases.

Here at Brave New Radio, we strive to play the latest and greatest music in genres of Alt-Hip Hop, Hip Hop, R&B and more. When hearing Drake’s latest release some of us had mixed emotions. “It was nice to see Drake actually take risks and try something different,” recent WPU graduate Justis Gregg expressed. Justis was a strong member and leader of various departments here at Brave New Radio, providing a good ear for the music we play at the station. “I liked some of the songs for sure, it’s great vibes for the summer. But there’s also some really bad songs on here, and overall, Drake was the worst part of them,” Justis continued.

Some say that this new drop gave more of a House music vibe. Our previous Music Director at Brave New Radio, Johan Yamoza, was a strong leader for our station, providing new songs every week for airplay and being a strong leader for our music department as a whole. “It’s Drake we’re talking about here,” Johan exclaimed, “people are going to like it and/or not like it. To me, the new album isn’t anything special. I’d rather listen to Drake’s older projects.” he said.

One of our current BNR members and host of the specialty show “Shuffle Play” had a negative view on Drake’s release as well. Justin Reynoso-Dume (a.k.a JRD) finds Drake to be a better singer than rapper. “He leaned too heavily on the club/pop dance genres with this album”, he expressed.

It’s no surprise that fans were expecting Drake’s new project to be similar to his past hits. Unfortunately, this album came as a surprise for most, resulting in a totally different vibe of music than what we’re used to from Drake. Fans are blowing up social media with mixed feelings on this subpar project claiming that it was a waste of time and unexpected.
